A16z-backed Espresso announces mainnet launch of core product

Espresso, a blockchain project focused on cross-chain composability and backed by venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, announced that its confirmation layer is now live on the mainnet.

The launch follows two years of research and development, five testnets, and plans to integrate with more than 20 chains. The Espresso Systems team said in the announcement that this milestone marks a significant advancement for the team as it works to make Ethereum (ETH) reusable.

Espresso notes that the confirmation layer provides the infrastructure for chains to interact quickly and reliably, allowing aggregates to achieve concurrent composability. This layer allows two composable chains to verify their respective state transitions by reading each other’s transaction data.

“To achieve simultaneous composability, chains need a common source of truth that they can use to quickly and reliably verify state transitions of other chains,” Espresso wrote.

According to the Espresso team, several ecosystem partners are preparing to integrate the approval layer. These partners include bridges, chains, stack providers, and Aggregation as a service (also known as RaaS) platforms.

Specific partners include Linux-powered aggregation platform Cartesi, modular zero-knowledge stack chains Airchains, and Arbitrum creators OffChain Labs. Additional partners include bridge platform Across Protocol and RaaS provider AltLayer.

Espresso plans to roll out the mainnet in phases, gradually distributing functionality, onboarding launch partners, and centralizing the set of node operators. A roadmap outlines the main components planned for release throughout 2025.

The Espresso team raised $28 million in a Series B round led by VC platform a16z Crypto in March.
