Coinbase hints at PNUT listing through Apple Pay tutorial

Viral meme coin Peanut the Squirrel was featured in Coinbase’s 15-second Apple Pay training video, leading to speculation that a PNUT Coinbase listing may be on the horizon.

In the final seconds of the video, the iPhone screen shows the Gopher Nuts (PNUT) meme coin, a coin that is not currently listed on Coinbase. However, in the exchange’s new Apply Pay tutorial, the token is shown as number one in the trend list and is placed under the spot tag.

Moreover, the last clip in the tutorial reveals a PNUT price page with its bright green chart rising upwards. Many traders on X immediately noticed this little easter egg and took it as a sign that the viral squirrel-themed meme coin could be coming to Coinbase.

“List Coinbase soon. Pnut 30B$ 50B$,” one user stated in the comment section.

Another user said: “Big win for $pnut but don’t sleep, we are 24 hours away from our drop.”

According to Crypto.news data, PNUT increased by approximately 12% in the last 24 hours. Last week, the token increased by 11.3% and last month by 981.41%. PNUT currently has a market cap of $1.2 billion and a fully diluted valuation of the same.

Another meme coin spotted by traders is PNUT’s sister token, which features prominently in the video, the first condemned raccoon, or FRED, named after Fred, the raccoon who was seized by authorities along with Peanut from a rural New York home .

“I’m even more excited about the possibility of #Fred being listed on Coinbase. A sharp-eyed trader said #Fred is no dream if Moodeng is on the list.

Crypto exchange Coinbase announced the launch of the Apply Payment option for fiat-to-crypto purchases via Coinbase Onramp on December 2.

The announcement included a short tutorial video showing an iPhone interface where users can use Apple Pay to enable crypto purchases. However, the link to the video remains “unlisted” on the official Coinbase YouTube account at the time of this writing.

The tragic origins of PNUT and FRED

Launched in November, PNUT and FRED are Solana-based meme coins that pay homage to the viral internet animal couple, a squirrel named Peanut and a raccoon named Fred.

Peanut is rescued from a car accident by Mark Longo, who runs an Instagram account chronicling the lives of Peanuts and Fred. But the animals met a tragic end when the New York City Department of Environmental Conservation seized them from Longo’s New York home following anonymous complaints.

Peanut and Fred died after allegedly being euthanized by authorities. The incident caused a public outcry, especially among animal rights activists and ordinary people, including Elon Musk, who saw the squirrel as a symbol of unnecessary government intervention.

The crypto community immortalized two iconic internet animals by creating meme coins named after them.
