Come for the stay, leave with $100k in crypto

An Airbnb host added an unusual rule after discovering that his guests were mining crypto on his property.

Homeowner Ashley shared on TikTok that her guests left the house in great condition and even received a five-star review — but she was shocked when she received a $1,500 electricity bill.

When Ashley reviewed footage from outside security cameras, she noticed that guests had brought more than a dozen computer equipment and set up a makeshift electric vehicle charging station.

After contacting the guests and providing evidence, they admitted to mining cryptocurrencies and making over $100,000 during their three-week stay.

No more crypto mining!

Ashley initially struggled to get guests to pay the bill, but Airbnb stepped in to ensure payment was made, subsequently adding “no crypto mining” and “no electric vehicle charging” to the house rules.

Other Airbnb hosts have reportedly implemented similar measures in response to the energy-intensive nature of cryptocurrency mining, which is known to put a significant strain on electricity supplies.

“It was cheaper for them to rent a house than to pay for electricity,” Ashley said on TikTok.
