EigenLayer now supports any ERC-20 token as restakable asset

EigenLayer has announced the launch of permissionless token support on mainnet, significantly expanding the protocol’s resttake feature.

Permissionless token support is now live on mainnet, allowing any ERC-20 token to be used as a re-stakeable asset on EigenLayer, the Eigen Labs team announced on X on August 26.

Re-staking allows participants in the proof-of-stake ecosystem to re-use staked assets to secure additional PoS networks and earn rewards in the process.

“Any ERC-20 asset can now be used for cryptoeconomic security. New ERC-20 asset categories include native AVS tokens, stablecoins, and BTC-denominated tokens.”

EigenLayer provides Ethereum (ETH) backing and supports its native EIGEN as well as the Ether token.

According to data from DeFiLlama, the total value locked in the protocol currently stands at over $12.76 billion, while EigenLayer’s rival in the resting market, Symbiotic, has a TVL of $1.73 billion.

Special majority support

In addition to permissionless token support, EigenDA, an actively verified service on EigenLayer that offers low-cost data availability for rollups, has also introduced EigenDA Private Majorities. This feature allows teams to re-stake ERC-20 tokens to secure private majorities for their rollups, increasing security for rollup users and providing token yield for token holders.

Rollups will initially partner with the EigenDA team to add tokens to their private majority, and the process will then become permissionless. EigenLayer also expects stakers to use the new feature to stake any ERC20 tokens EigenDA decides to use.

Stakeholders will be able to transfer supported tokens to operators who help secure EigenDA.
