TON Blockchain Recovers After Six-Hour Outage Amid DOGS Meme Coin Frenzy

The Open Network (TON) recently experienced a major outage, halting transactions for over six hours due to an abnormal increase in activity.

According to chain data, the outage began around 22:11 UTC on August 27, when TON stopped producing new blocks.

Breaking the consensus

One of the first to raise the alarm about the problem was Tonk Inu, a web-based crypto community. In a post on X, he informed users that TON’s services had been discontinued. The report also hinted at high traffic volumes caused by the recently launched meme coin DOGS as a reason for the outage.

Shortly after, a TON Foundation member named Justin, while responding to a request from crypto investor Chris Burniske, also attributed the outage to an overwhelming load caused by the DOGS token.

Additionally, TON also posted a statement on their official X account acknowledging the outage. He explained that excessive load on the blockchain had caused several validators to fail to flush their databases of old transactions, leading to a consensus breakdown.

To resolve the issue, the team behind the network said it had ordered block verifiers to restart at 4:00am UTC on August 28.

After a six-hour downtime, services were eventually restored, and the platform announced on the morning of August 28 that it was back online and operating normally.

TON Blockchain Update DOGS Price Drops After TON Downtime

For its part, DOGS, the alleged cause of the network failure, has been significantly reduced. After its price peaked at $0.001856 upon launch, the coin is changing hands at around $0.0012, giving it a market cap of $645 million.

Commercial activity has also slowed. Initially, it recorded a 24-hour trading volume of more than $1.7 billion, but the latest figures from CoinMarketCap show that it attracted just over $1 billion in the last day.

It’s also not lost on observers that TON’s latest troubles come in the wake of the arrest in France of Telegram co-founder Pavel Durov. According to reports, Durov’s arrest is related to alleged insufficient moderation on the messaging platform, particularly regarding issues related to drug trafficking, child sexual content and fraud.
