Azerbaijan accused of pressuring media before hosting Cop29

Azerbaijan has reportedly arrested at least 25 journalists and activists in the past year as it prepares for the climate summit in November.

Human Rights Watch found that at least 25 journalists and activists were arrested or convicted in the past year, and nearly all of them remain in custody.

Many campaigners and civil society groups have raised concerns that climate advocacy is being hindered by pressures on the media.

Azerbaijan will host the UN Cop29 climate summit for two weeks in November, where nearly 200 governments, including dozens of state leaders, are expected to determine a new global approach to providing the funds necessary to combat the climate crisis.
