Chinese Bitcoin miner Bitmain is expanding its operations in the United States by launching a local production line.
In a Dec. 9 post, Bitmain said the move will help it better serve North American customers by reducing delivery times, improving supply chain efficiency and providing more responsive support.
The company plans to launch the first batch of Antminer s21 pro by the end of December.
Its flagship product, the Antminer S21 Pro, offers a hash rate of 234 terahashes per second with a power efficiency of 15 joules per terahash. According to Bitmain, the device will “provide significant support” to its industry partners, which include leading names such as HIVE Digital and Hut 8.
Founded in 2013, Bitmain is considered the largest manufacturer of application-specific integrated circuits and reportedly holds 90% of the Bitcoin mining hardware market through its Antminer series.
Beyond its mining hardware, the company also operates Antpool, a leading mining pool that accounts for approximately 20% of the current Bitcoin mining hashrate, according to data from blockchain.com.
The company’s latest move comes amid delays in importing its hardware into the US market. Last month, reports emerged that US Customs and Border Protection had halted imports of Bitmain’s Antminers, including the S21 and T21 series.
Speculation at the time suggested that the delays were linked to Bitmain’s ties to Chinese semiconductor company Xiamen Sophgo, which produces the chips used in some of its machines. However, Bitmain had previously stated that it was not involved in any investigation regarding its supply chain.
While the halt does not affect other Chinese miners, Bitmain’s latest move could potentially be in response to rising trade tensions between China and the United States. President-elect Donald Trump announced plans to impose additional tariffs on Chinese imports.
Bitmain’s production expansion in the US is also in line with Trump’s plan to mine all remaining Bitcoin domestically; Trump claims that this move will increase energy dominance and reduce dependence on foreign operations.
In related news, Bitmain is expanding its product line and has partnered with Bitcoin miner Hut 8 to develop a new ASIC miner that can produce up to 860 TH/s.
