Eric Adams defends Bitcoin paychecks

New York City Mayor Eric Adams reiterated his support for Bitcoin, reflecting the skepticism he faced when he first decided to convert his paychecks into cryptocurrency in 2022.

At a recent media event, Adams said: “We shouldn’t be afraid of Bitcoin. Remember when you all laughed at me when I first got my Bitcoin? Who’s laughing now? Now go look at my Bitcoin.”

Adams converted his first three paychecks as mayor into Bitcoin (BTC) and crypto in 2022; It was a move that received both praise and criticism.

It faced public skepticism, with many questioning the viability of the decision during an unstable market period. Addressing his critics, he said: “You are all making fun of me… Now you wish you had done this.”

Per the event, Adams sees cryptocurrencies as tools for innovation and economic empowerment, especially in underserved communities.

This proud sentiment echoes that of another famous person who gets paid in crypto: Odell Beckham Jr.

In 2021, Beckham Jr., a former Los Angeles Rams wide receiver, partnered with CashApp to receive his $4.25 million salary in Bitcoin during the 2021-2022 NFL season. As part of the deal, he gifted $1 million worth of Bitcoin to fans on Twitter.

Last month, Beckham Jr. bragged to X about his decision: “So who said getting my Rams salary in bitcoin was stupid again?”
