Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of the Ethereum network, has outlined several overriding goals for the future development of the blockchain. These goals are designed to enhance The Surge, the second phase of Ethereum’s development roadmap, which aims to scale the network through stacks.
According to a blog post, Buterin’s solutions aim to solve the blockchain trilemma, sampling progress data availability, mature Layer 2 (L2) test systems, execution at scale of Ethereum’s Layer 1 (L1) network and improve interoperability between L2 chains.
The rollup focused roadmap
The Surge roadmap has already witnessed some successes, such as the expansion of Ethereum L1 data bandwidth with the introduction of blobs, the growth of Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) compatible packages and the implementation of fragmentation in L2 networks.
However, these developments have presented unique challenges, and Buterin believes that the task of Ethereum developers is to complete the rollup-focused roadmap by solving the problems while preserving the robustness and decentralization of the network.
It is worth mentioning that the key goals of The Surge include at least 100,000 transactions per second on Ethereum and its L2s, preserving the decentralization and robustness of the Ethereum L1, maximum interoperability between L2s, and some L2s inheriting core properties of Ethereum like trust, openness. , and resistance to censorship.
Buterin’s goals for the wave
Ethereum’s founder proposed using a combination of data availability sampling and SNARKs to solve the blockchain trilemma. It refers to the challenge of achieving the three critical aspects of blockchain technology: security, scalability and decentralization. The concept argues that it is difficult to achieve all three simultaneously, as optimizing one often compromises the others.
Buterin believes the trilemma can be achieved through data availability sampling, which can be made possible by compressing data on the Ethereum network. Because each transaction in a set takes up significant data space on the chain, data can be compressed by aggregating signatures, replacing addresses with pointers, and creating custom serialization for transaction values.
Furthermore, the Ethereum developer insisted that L2-proof systems can mature and become reliable. These systems must reach a stage where they are not trusted and ensure that only valid transactions are accepted.
Additionally, Buterin mentioned the challenge for users to easily navigate the L2 ecosystem. He said some ways to make the L2 ecosystem feel like a unified Ethereum network is being used is to introduce chain-specific addresses and payment requests and a standardized open protocol for cross-chain operations.
Meanwhile, the IT programmer stressed the importance of scaling Ethereum L1 while improving L2 because the development of only layer 2 chains could pose risks to the entire ecosystem in the future.
