Justin Sun eats $6.2m dollar Cattelan banana art work in Hong Kong event

Tron creator Justin Sun reportedly ate the $6.2 million banana from Maurizio Cattelan’s “Comedian” statue. Sun had previously purchased the banana at a Sotheby’s auction.

Broadcasting live from his X account, Tron(TRON) founder Justin Sun ate Cattelan’s banana at an open event in Hong Kong. In a video circulating online, Sun ripped a banana off the wall after removing the duct tape that was part of the statue.

He then peeled the banana and took a bite in front of a small crowd, earning excited cheers from the audience. Sun spoke briefly into the microphone in Mandarin before taking another bite and holding out the half-eaten fruit to save for later.

Shortly after the news broke, Sun announced that he would purchase 100,000 bananas from a sidewalk fruit vendor on New York’s Upper East Side, who initially sold the bananas used in the original artwork for 25 cents. Sun stated that he plans to distribute the bananas worldwide.

“Mr. Shah Alam, the owner of a fruit stand on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, has inadvertently become a major contributor to a groundbreaking work of art. Far from being an ordinary fruit, this banana has acquired deep cultural and artistic significance,” said Sun.

As previously reported by Crypto.news on November 21, Justin Sun purchased the banana for a whopping $6.2 million at Sotheby’s after six minutes of bidding. The banana is part of Maurizio Cattelan’s “Comedian,” which features a banana taped to the wall.

Following the purchase, Sotheby’s issued Sun a certificate of authenticity granting him the right to display the work as an official work of art. The auction house also gave him a “starter kit” consisting of a banana, a roll of duct tape, and a detailed instruction manual on how the piece should be presented.

At the time, Tron’s founder expressed his desire to eat the $6.2 million banana “as part of this unique artistic experience that honors its place in both art history and popular culture.” Sun became the third person to eat Cattelan’s banana, other than a hungry South Korean student and New York-based performance artist David Datuna.
