It appears that Near Protocol’s X page was breached by hackers who were not interested in promoting fake airdrops or rug pulls.
Strange posts were seen being made on September 4th from the X account of the Layer 1 proof-of-stake blockchain Near Protocol (NEAR).
These types of account hijackings are common in cryptocurrency, and bad actors often target decentralized finance protocols. Typically, hackers use compromised access to launch phishing campaigns and steal funds.
However, the Near Protocol hacker deviated from this pattern, posting a series of anti-crypto messages targeting crypto users and the heart of web3.
Delete your X account, get out there and live a normal life, guys. Nothing good will come out of this. Trust me.
Unknown Nearby Protocol hacker
At the time of writing, unknown individuals were still controlling Near’s X page and continued to criticize the $2 trillion cryptocurrency ecosystem and the blockchain industry that underlies it. This is the second time this year that L1’s X account has been hacked, following a previous incident in May.

While it may seem different from other breaches, Near Protocol has joined a growing list of DeFi and crypto-related projects that have been subject to attacks.
According to Crypto.news, X accounts belonging to members of the Trump family were recently used in a scam promoting a Solana-based (SOL) memecoin. In late August, the likeness of soccer star Kylian Mbappe was used to steal more than $1 million from crypto traders.
The hackers also compromised accounts belonging to heavy metal band Metallica, Frax Finance founder Sam Kazemian, and pseudonymous cryptocurrency trader GCR.
