Universal Privacy Alliance names Amelia Andersdotter as interim director

Universal Privacy Alliance has appointed Amelia Andersdotter as interim director.

Andersdotter, a long-time advocate for internet privacy, will focus on strengthening UPA’s operations and promoting privacy-focused technologies, according to a press release shared with Crypto.news.

Founded in 2023, UPA brings together Web3 companies such as Nym Technologies, Protocol Labs Network, Filecoin Foundation, Oasis and Aztec. These companies aim to protect digital privacy and ensure safe online interactions.

The alliance supports the principle of “privacy by design” by ensuring that platforms are built with user privacy and security as default features. UPA’s efforts are particularly important as regulatory frameworks such as the EU’s eIDAS and the Digital Services Act challenge privacy and encryption standards in the Web3 space.

It also works to prevent misuse or tracking of personal data.

Andersdotter, a former MEP from the Swedish Pirate Party, is known for his work opposing the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement. His activism helped block a trade deal that many believed would harm internet privacy. Since then, he has continued his work in this area, contributing to privacy research and policy development.

UPA plans to expand its focus on educating policymakers, sharing legal resources among members, and creating a legal fund to defend privacy rights.

As digital privacy becomes a growing concern, UPA and Andersdotter aim to create technology that protects personal information from surveillance and misuse.
