While many prominent figures in the crypto ecosystem have openly supported Donald Trump, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has spoken out against endorsing candidates based solely on whether they are “pro-crypto.”
“By giving the impression that you support pro-crypto candidates simply because they are ‘pro-crypto,’ you are making politicians think that all they need to do to get your support is support ‘crypto,'” Buterin wrote on his blog.
“There is a push to be more politically active in the crypto space and to support political parties and candidates only if they are willing to be tolerant and friendly towards ‘crypto,’” he added. “In this article, I push back against this trend and argue that making decisions this way specifically risks going against the values that brought you into the crypto space in the first place.”
The comments from Buterin, who is seen as Ethereum’s intellectual leader, stand in contrast to the strong pro-Trump rhetoric from other prominent crypto figures.
Ryan Selkis, co-founder of crypto information platform Messari, is among those who stand out, describing himself as a “single-issue voter,” meaning he prefers Trump over incumbent Joe Biden because Trump says he loves crypto. Selkis even attended a recent Mar-a-Lago gala where Trump introduced his NFT collection and spoke about his newfound friendship with digital assets.
Selkis, who openly stated that he is a Trump supporter, said about Buterin wrote: “I respect Vitalik but he has always been among the most naive and useless political commentators in crypto. Idealism is not realism and he claims that we are not facing a cultural invasion of Marxism but he is wrong.”
