The hacker behind the $82 million Orbit Chain attack on New Year’s Eve transferred $47.7 million of cryptocurrency to Tornado Cash after five months of silence.
According to blockchain analysis firm Arkham Intelligence, a total of 12,932 deposits worth $47.7 million. Ether (ETH) , moved to a new address on June 8th and sent it to Tornado Cash. It was reported that this attack caused a loss of $82 million, but Arkham’s latest shipments indicate that this was closer to $100 million.
Crypto attacker attracted attention with ETH transfers
Arkham, one of the first companies to notice the transfer, said in its post on June 8 Etherscan information shows that the $47.7 million in Ether sent via Tornado Cash was mostly in clusters of 100 ETH.
The hacker did not move the $20 million worth of stolen Dai (DAI) or other coins mined from the mid-chain bridge. Their balance currently stands at $71.2 million; This includes $51.1 million in Ether and small amounts of Bitcoin (wBTC), Ether (wETH), Orbit Chain (ORC) and USD Coin (USDC).
The attack took place in the last hours of 2023. Orbit Chain confirmed the cyberattack the next day and said it was “actively engaging” with international law enforcement. Orbit Chain’s X account said on January 11: “Those who provide definitive intelligence leading to the identification of the attacker or the recovery of stolen assets will receive the reward. “We are offering a maximum reward of $8 million.”
According to DefiLlama, the total value is locked in Orbit Chain, approximately 37 million dollars. However, this number is 75 percent lower than the $149.25 value locked in the protocol a few hours before the December 31 attack.
