First results of the European Parliament elections announced

The first results of the European Parliament elections held between 6-9 June in the 27-member European Union have been announced. The results revealed that the far right made valuable gains.

The four-day election process in Europe ended after the last votes were cast in Italy, where the voting process continued until 23:00 local time on Sunday.

According to the first, non-final official results, in the 720-member European Parliament, the European People’s Party (EPP) 189, the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D) 135, Renew Europe (Renew) 80, the European Party of Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) 72, Identity and Democracy. His Party (ID) will be represented by 58 deputies, the Greens (Greens/EFA) by 52 and the Left (GUE/NGL) by 36 deputies in the European Parliament. According to the first results, the number of independent members elected to the parliament is 46, and the number of newly elected members who have not joined an alliance with any parliamentary cluster is now 52.

Ursula von der Leyen declared their victory

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the winner of the elections was the European People’s Party (EPP).

The leader of the European People’s Party thanked European voters for their faith. von der Leyen, “Today is a welcome day for the European People’s Party. “We won the European elections.”he said.

Emphasizing that it is true that far-right and left-leaning parties have gained power, but that the center parties maintain their presidential positions, Von der Leyen pointed out that it is not possible to form a majority in the parliament that does not include the European People’s Party.

National Assembly dissolved in France

The overwhelming superiority achieved in the elections by the National Rally (RN), the far-right party of Marine Le Pen in France, caused French President Emmanuel Macron to decide to dissolve the National Assembly and call early elections. Accepting defeat in his statement about the results, Macron said: “I received your message, I understand your concerns and I will not leave them unanswered.”he said.

The far right gained power in Germany

In Germany, the largest country in the 27-member union, the first results revealed that the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, which received 11 percent of the votes in 2019, increased its vote rate to 14.2 percent.

According to the results, the vote rate of the German Christian Democratic Union (CDU) was 30.90 percent, and the vote rate of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s party, the Social Democratic Party (SPD), was 14.6 percent.

Belgian Prime Minister De Croo announced his resignation

In Belgium, Prime Minister Alexander De Croo announced that he would resign following the disastrous results of his party in the European Parliament elections. De Croo:

“I was the one leading this election campaign. This is not the outcome I hoped for and I take responsibility for that outcome. It wasn’t supposed to be like this. “I will resign as prime minister starting tomorrow.”

European People’s Party announced that it would be an obstacle for the far right to come to power

European People’s Party (EPP) Leader Manfred Weber announced that they will aim to prevent far-right parties from taking part in the ruling coalition.

Calling on mainstream parties in Europe to join the pro-European and pro-democracy alliance of the European People’s Party, Weber said:

“We created today’s Europe, so anyone who wants to destroy Europe is our enemy. We will fight with them. “We will not allow such people to have any influence at the European level.”

According to the claims, the voter turnout was approximately 51 percent, the highest rate seen since 1994.

In the 2019 elections, this rate was measured as 50.66 percent.
